Exciting Journey of London's Cabaret to Broadway this Spring, Featuring Eddie Redmayne and Gayle Rankin in Leading Roles
As anticipated, the highly acclaimed immersive rendition of the beloved Kander & Ebb classic, Cabaret, set in London and featuring Eddie Redmayne as the Emcee, is making its move to Broadway this spring. Taking on the iconic role of Sally Bowles will be Gayle Rankin.
The show will kick off with previews on April 1, 2024, at the August Wilson Theatre, culminating in an official opening night on April 21. On April 20, a grand opening gala will take place. This remarkable musical boasts a remarkable score by John Kander, lyrics penned by Fred Ebb, and a captivating book by Joe Masteroff.
The brilliant Rebecca Frecknall, who directed the London production, will also helm the Broadway adaptation. The talented designer Tom Scutt is set to recreate his magic on Broadway. As in the London production, Cabaret on Broadway will provide an immersive experience, transforming the August Wilson Theatre into the fabled Kit Kat Klub. Attendees will have the opportunity to indulge in pre-show drinks and dining, immersing themselves in the atmosphere of pre-World War II Berlin.
Director Frecknall shared her thoughts, "Cabaret is a masterpiece of storytelling that continually unveils its depth to us. Masteroff, Kander, and Ebb have crafted characters teetering on the edge, within a world where the rules are in flux. Acts of courage, defiance, hope, delusion, fear, and anger reverberate among them and their surroundings, all profoundly human reactions to a world in turmoil. I'm thrilled to reunite with Eddie, our devilishly seductive Emcee, the symbolic soul of Berlin. I'm also eager to embark on rehearsals with Gayle, an audacious and supremely talented actress, as she delves into Cabaret's magnetic core, the enchanting and heart-rending Sally Bowles."
In the original London revival, Jessie Buckley portrayed Sally Bowles.
Expect further casting details and exciting updates about Cabaret on Broadway in the weeks ahead.
Rankin expressed her deep gratitude, saying, "I am truly honored to step into the shoes of Sally in this extraordinary, powerful production. I am forever thankful to Rebecca, Eddie, and the entire creative team for inviting me to be part of this Broadway endeavor." Rankin's impressive theater background is complemented by her upcoming role as healer Alys Rivers in the second season of HBO's House of the Dragon.
Redmayne, reflecting on his participation, said, "It was over 25 years ago when I played 'The Emcee' in a student production of Cabaret that my love for theater truly ignited. It's now immensely thrilling and somewhat surreal to be part of Rebecca's distinct vision of Masteroff, Kander, and Ebb's brilliance as it arrives on Broadway, where this piece has such a rich history. I'm incredibly excited to be sharing the stage with the remarkable Gayle Rankin and an exceptionally talented cast and crew. I hope we can create an experience for you like no other."
Redmayne and Rankin have both been confirmed for a limited engagement running until August 31, 2024. Starting from June 17, Redmayne won't perform on Monday evenings, and Rankin will have Wednesday matinees off.
The creative team is further bolstered by Julia Cheng (choreography), Jennifer Whyte (Music Supervision & Music Direction), Isabella Byrd (Lighting Design), Nick Lidster for Autograph (Sound Design), Sam Cox (Hair & Wig Design), and Guy Common (Makeup Design).
The production is being brought to life by an impressive team that includes Ambassador Theatre Group Productions, Underbelly, Gavin Kalin Productions, Hunter Arnold, Smith & Brant Theatricals, and Wessex Grove.
The West End production of Cabaret is now entering its third year and recently welcomed Jake Shears as 'The Emcee' and Rebecca Lucy Taylor as 'Sally Bowles.'
